Congratulations to Associate Professor of Public Health and Community Practice, Marianne Cockroft, PhD, RN, the 2021 recipient of the Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Award.
Cockroft was selected for her proposal to support the community service and outreach of the SON Mobile Health Clinic.
Founded in 2016, the SON Mobile Health Clinic provides free health care services to underserved communities. Services provided include blood pressure checks, diabetes and cholesterol assessments, mental health screening, education on chronic diseases, nutrition information, smoking cessation resources and sick care visits. Through partnerships with other organizations the clinic has been able to expand their services to include retina screenings, HIV/STD testing and education, children’s dental screenings as well as flu vaccines.
Fifteen SON faculty members and 78 students have volunteered with the clinic providing more than 1,000 hours of community service to more than 3,000 clients. Many of these clients are unemployed (55%) or uninsured (55%), and 70% report at least one chronic health condition.
The Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Fund was established by the Booths in 2016 with the goal to support faculty and students who wish to engage in community service for the betterment of the health and welfare of North Carolinians. Marianne is the third recipient of this award, following Jean Davison, DNP, RN, FNP-C in 2019 and Rebecca Kitzmiller, PhD, MHR, RN, BC in 2018.
